Interview with GCI Alumni: Tanisha from Mauritius

In this GCI Alumni Interview Series, we feature past participants of the Global Consumer Intelligence program and share their experiences, learning journeys, and career growth after joining GCI.

This article features Tanisha Botharrygadoo, an undergraduate student studying Data Analytics, Data Science, and Machine Learning at Sunway University in Malaysia, where I'm pursuing my degree as an international student from Mauritius. Through this interview, Tanisha shares what motivated her to join GCI, the skills and knowledge gained through the program, and how the experience has contributed to Tanisha’s academic and professional journey.

    Q1: Please introduce yourself

    (In English)

Hi, I'm Tanisha from Mauritius. I'm currently an undergraduate student studying Data Analytics, Data Science, and Machine Learning at Sunway University in Malaysia, where I'm pursuing my degree as an international student.

Q2: What motivated you to join GCI?

    (In English)

I wanted to go beyond the theory I was learning in my coursework and see how machine learning is actually applied to real business problems. GCI's connection to the University of Tokyo and Matsuo Lab — one of the most respected AI research groups in the world — made it feel like a rare opportunity, and the fact that the program combined technical data science training with entrepreneurship really stood out to me. I wanted a program that would push me outside my usual academic environment and let me learn alongside an international cohort.

Q3: What skills, knowledge, or experiences did you gain through GCI?

    (In English)

Through GCI, I developed a much stronger practical understanding of the end-to-end data science process — from data collection and preprocessing to model development and evaluation — applied to real consumer and business problems rather than clean textbook datasets. I also learned how to build a business proposal from scratch, which taught me how to identify a real opportunity, validate an idea, and translate a technical solution into something that actually makes business sense. On top of the technical side, I significantly improved how I communicate complex ideas to a non-technical audience, and I learned to collaborate with teammates from completely different academic and cultural backgrounds.

Q4: How has GCI helped you in your academic or professional journey?

    (In English)

GCI showed me that succeeding in data science isn't just about building accurate models — it's also about understanding the business context behind the data and being able to communicate insights clearly. That perspective has directly changed how I approach my coursework and personal projects. It gave me the confidence to see myself working at the intersection of technology and business. It also gave me exposure to cutting-edge research at UTokyo and glimpse into inspiring startups like Bakutan Inc, which strengthened my academic profile and career goals.

Q5: What was the most memorable part of your GCI experience?

    (In English)

The most memorable part for me was the onsite experience in Tokyo — attending lectures, meeting business leaders and researchers, and working intensively to turn an idea into a real business proposal within a tight deadline. Presenting our work and receiving direct feedback from mentors and judges made it feel like a genuine, high-stakes learning experience, and being surrounded by driven students from all over the world made it even more memorable.

Q6: What would you say to someone considering applying to GCI?

    (In English)

Apply, even if you feel like you don't have enough experience yet — GCI is designed to push you and help you grow quickly, not to test what you already know. Don't overthink it or wait until you feel “qualified enough” — nobody really is at first, and that's the point. You'll learn a ton, meet people from all over the world, and probably surprise yourself with what you can build in a short time. It pushed me way more than I expected, in a good way, and I don't regret it at all.
