In this GCI Alumni Interview Series, we feature past participants of the Global Consumer Intelligence program and share their experiences, learning journeys, and career growth after joining GCI.
This article features Mohsen Shahin, a fourth-year Pharmacy student at Al-Azhar University and co-founder of The Success Dose Initiative from Egypt. Through this interview, Mohsen shares what motivated him to join GCI, the skills and knowledge gained through the program, and how the experience has contributed to Mohsen’s academic and professional journey.
Q1: Please introduce yourself

I am Mohsen Shahin from Egypt, a fourth-year pharmacy student at Al-Azhar University, Assiut branch. I strongly believe in the integration of sciences; hence, I bridge pharmaceutical knowledge with my passion for modern technologies like AI and data analytics, aiming to leverage them to advance healthcare. I also co-founded 'The Success Dose' to serve as a compass for pharmacy students, enabling them to explore diverse career paths beyond traditional boundaries.

أنا محسن شاهين من مصر، طالب بالسنة الرابعة في كلية الصيدلة بجامعة الأزهر فرع أسيوط. أؤمن بتكامل العلوم؛ لذا أدمج في مسيرتي بين المعرفة الصيدلانية وشغفي بالتقنيات الحديثة كالذكاء الاصطناعي وتحليل البيانات، طامحاً لتوظيفها في تطوير الرعاية الصحية. كما أسست مع زملائي مبادرة 'The Success Dose' لتكون بوصلة لطلاب الصيدلة، تمكنهم من استكشاف مسارات مهنية متنوعة خارج الإطار التقليدي.
Q2: What motivated you to join GCI?

I joined GCI with a strong ambition to connect my research experience with the immense potential of data science and artificial intelligence. Although I had previously participated in international research competitions, I realized that my limited data-analysis skills sometimes prevented my work from reaching its full potential. I was especially fascinated by how AI could reduce the need for hundreds of laboratory experiments by proactively predicting the most promising outcomes. My interest in both AI and business further motivated me to join GCI, as I saw it as an opportunity to learn how emerging technologies can transform research into innovative solutions and create real-world value.

جاءت خطوة انضمامي إلى برنامج GCI مدفوعةً بطموحٍ كبير لدمج تجاربي في البحث العلمي مع القوة الهائلة لعلم البيانات والذكاء الاصطناعي. فرغم مشاركاتي السابقة في مسابقات بحثية دولية، أدركت أن محدودية مهاراتي في تحليل البيانات كانت تقف أحياناً عائقاً أمام بلوغ نتائجي أقصى إمكاناتها.
استهواني بشدة كيف يمكن للذكاء الاصطناعي أن يختصر مئات التجارب المعملية عبر التنبؤ الاستباقي بالمسارات الناجحة.
كما كان اهتمامي بعالم الأعمال محركاً أساسياً لاختياري هذا المسار؛ إذ أرى في الذكاء الاصطناعي أداةً قادرة على ترجمة الأبحاث النظرية إلى حلولٍ مبتكرة وقيمة اقتصادية حقيقية على أرض الواقع.
Q3: What skills, knowledge, or experiences did you gain through GCI?

Through GCI, I gained a structured, practical understanding of data analysis, predictive modeling, and machine learning. I learned how to manage the entire data lifecycle—from preprocessing and model building to evaluating performance and translating results into actionable insights.
Beyond the technical side, GCI also helped me understand the connection between data, AI, business, and decision-making. Working on practical assignments and business-oriented problems improved my problem-solving, critical thinking, and presentation skills.
The Japan Study Tour was also an important part of the experience. Visiting the University of Tokyo, seeing AI and robotics research, and learning from business companies showed me how research and technology can be translated into practical business and social applications. It broadened my perspective and made me more interested in applying data and AI to healthcare and pharmaceutical challenges.

من خلال برنامج GCI، اكتسبت فهماً عملياً ومنهجياً لتحليل البيانات، والنمذجة التنبؤية، وتعلم الآلة. كما تعلمت كيفية إدارة دورة حياة البيانات بالكامل؛ بدءاً من معالجتها المسبقة وبناء النماذج الخوارزمية، وصولاً إلى تقييم أدائها وترجمة مخرجاتها إلى رؤى استراتيجية قابلة للتنفيذ.
وبعيداً عن الجانب التقني، منحني البرنامج رؤية أعمق للترابط الوثيق بين البيانات والذكاء الاصطناعي من جهة، وريادة الأعمال وصنع القرار من جهة أخرى. وقد أسهم العمل على مهام وتحديات واقعية ذات طابع تجاري في صقل مهاراتي في حل المشكلات والتفكير النقدي، فضلاً عن تطوير قدراتي في العرض والتقديم.
كما مثلت الجولة الدراسية في اليابان محطة فاصلة في هذه التجربة؛ فزيارة جامعة طوكيو والاطلاع على أحدث أبحاث الذكاء الاصطناعي والروبوتات والتعلم المباشر من الشركات الرائدة، أظهر لي بوضوح كيف يمكن تحويل الأبحاث التكنولوجية إلى تطبيقات تجارية ومجتمعية ملموسة. لقد وسعت هذه الرحلة مداركي، ورسخت إرادتي لتسخير قوة البيانات والذكاء الاصطناعي في ابتكار حلول فعلية لتحديات الرعاية الصحية والصناعات الدوائية.
Q4: How has GCI helped you in your academic or professional journey?

GCI has changed the way I approach both my academic work and future career. It gave me a more structured, data-driven way of thinking and showed me how data analysis, predictive modeling, and AI can be applied beyond theory to real-world problems. As a pharmacy student with an interest in research and business, this experience helped me see how I can connect my pharmaceutical background with emerging technologies to develop practical solutions. It also strengthened my confidence in presenting ideas and collaborating with people from different backgrounds.

لقد أحدث برنامج GCI تغييراً كبيراً في نظرتي لدراستي ومستقبلي المهني؛ فقد غرس فيَّ طريقة تفكير أكثر منهجية وتمرساً بلغة البيانات، وأبان لي كيف يمكن لعلم البيانات والنمذجة التنبؤية والذكاء الاصطناعي أن تتجاوز الحدود النظرية لتلامس مشكلات الواقع. وبصفتي طالبًا في الصيدلة مهتمًا بالبحث العلمي والأعمال، ساعدني البرنامج على إدراك كيفية الربط بين خلفيتي في مجال الأدوية والتقنيات الحديثة لتطوير حلول عملية. كما عزز ثقتي في عرض أفكاري، والتعاون مع أشخاص من خلفيات مختلفة.
Q5: What was the most memorable part of your GCI experience?

One of the most memorable parts of my GCI experience was the people I met along the way. Through the GCI community, I had the opportunity to connect with students from different countries and backgrounds, and many of them shared experiences and perspectives that taught me a lot. The Japan Study Tour made the experience even more special. Visiting the University of Tokyo, seeing AI and robotics research firsthand, meeting researchers and professionals, and sharing ideas with other participants created many unforgettable moments. More than the places themselves, what I will remember most is the people I met, the friendships I built, and how these experiences broadened the way I see AI, research, business, and my own future.

كان من أكثر جوانب تجربة GCI التي ستبقى في ذاكرتي الأشخاص الذين التقيت بهم خلال البرنامج. فمن خلال مجتمع GCI، أتيحت لي فرصة التعرف على طلاب من دول وخلفيات مختلفة، وقد أفادني كثير منهم من خلال تجاربهم ووجهات نظرهم المختلفة. وجعلت رحلة اليابان التجربة أكثر تميزًا؛ بدايةً من زيارة جامعة طوكيو والتعرف بشكل مباشر على أبحاث الذكاء الاصطناعي والروبوتات، وصولًا إلى لقاء الباحثين والمتخصصين وتبادل الأفكار مع المشاركين. وأكثر ما سأحتفظ به من هذه التجربة ليس الأماكن فقط، وإنما الأشخاص الذين تعرفت إليهم، والصداقات التي بنيتها، وكيف وسعت هذه التجارب نظرتي إلى الذكاء الاصطناعي والبحث العلمي والأعمال ومستقبلي بشكل عام.
Q6: What would you say to someone considering applying to GCI?

For anyone considering joining GCI, I would say: be patient, stay committed, and remain curious. To get the most out of the program, you need to be willing to explore the details that genuinely interest you and keep learning even when the topics become challenging. One of the most useful habits I developed was trying to explain what I learned to my peers in simple terms. Teaching others helped me understand the concepts more deeply and made what I learned much easier to retain. Most importantly, approach GCI not just as a course to complete, but as an opportunity to challenge yourself, learn continuously, and discover new ways of thinking.

لكل من يفكر في خوض تجربة GCI أنصحه بالتحلي بالصبر والالتزام والفضول. ولتحقق أقصى استفادة من البرنامج، عليك أن تكون مستعدًا للتعمق في التفاصيل التي تثير اهتمامك، والاستمرار في التعلم حتى عندما تصبح بعض الموضوعات أكثر تحديًا. ومن أكثر العادات التي أفادتني أن أحاول دائمًا تبسيط ما تعلمته وشرحه لزملائي؛ فقد ساعدني تعليم الآخرين على فهم المفاهيم بصورة أعمق وترسيخها في ذاكرتي. والأهم من ذلك، أن تنظر إلى GCI ليس باعتباره مجرد دورة عليك إكمالها، بل فرصة لتتحدى نفسك، وتتعلم باستمرار، وتكتشف طرقًا جديدة للتفكير.
