This article features Jade Carl Mendoza, a Computer Science Student at the University of the Philippines Open University from The Philippines. Through this interview, Jade shares what motivated him to join GCI, the skills and knowledge gained through the program, and how the experience has contributed to Jade’s academic and professional journey.

I am Jade Carl Mendoza, a Filipino engineer in the energy sector currently completing my Graduate Diploma in Computer Science at the University of the Philippines Open University. I specialize in combining engineering domain knowledge with data science and artificial intelligence to drive efficiency and innovation.

Dalubhasa ako sa pagsasama ng kaalaman sa larangan ng inhenyeriya at ng data science at artificial intelligence upang maghatid ng kahusayan at makabagong pamamaraan.
Q2: What motivated you to join GCI?
What motivates me to join GCI is my passion for innovation at the intersection of engineering and artificial intelligence. I aim to leverage AI as a powerful tool to maximize operational efficiency, unlock data-driven insights, and master industry best practices in data science and AI within Japan. Ultimately, it is my commitment to continuous learning that drives me to pursue this opportunity.
Q3: What skills, knowledge, or experiences did you gain through GCI?
I have developed strong foundational skills in data preparation, visualization, and machine learning, enabling me to apply data analytics effectively to real-world scenarios. Additionally, I have practical experience in bridging the gap between technical AI/machine learning solutions and tangible business value.
Q4: How has GCI helped you in your academic or professional journey?
GCI has significantly elevated both my academic and professional trajectory by giving me a structured, confident approach to data analysis. It enabled me to combine my engineering background with AI and data science to solve complex technical problems and deliver strategic value.
Q5: What was the most memorable part of your GCI experience?
The most memorable part of GCI was the final assignment, which challenged me to create a complete business proposal. Because the dataset required a strong grasp of domain knowledge, it tested my abilities to the fullest. Integrating the core lecture concepts while conducting independent research outside the provided dataset allowed me to refine my resourcefulness and develop practical, data-driven solutions.
Q6: What would you say to someone considering applying to GCI?
Before applying to GCI, it is crucial to first clarify your personal purpose. If you approach the program as more than just a search for a certificate, you will gain far more value from the experience. I entered GCI with a clear goal: to learn new skills and directly apply data science and AI to my background in electrical engineering, and having that clear mindset is what keeps you motivated throughout the journey.
The program itself is thoughtfully structured, beginning with core fundamentals before advancing into practical machine learning applications. Along the way, you will participate in an in-house competition—rather than feeling pressured by it, treat it as an exciting opportunity to test your growing skillset. While the final assignment is challenging, you will do great as long as you master the core concepts and stay resourceful by researching beyond the provided course materials.
