Interview with GCI Alumni: Rufaro from Zimbabwe


In this GCI Alumni Interview Series, we feature past participants of the Global Consumer Intelligence (GCI) program and share their experiences, learning journeys, and career growth after joining GCI.
This article features Rufaro Mugabe, a BTech Software Engineering student at Harare Institute of Technology (HIT) and CTO of Afrainity Technologies from Zimbabwe. Through this interview, Rufaro shares what motivated him to join GCI, the skills and knowledge gained through the program, and how the experience has contributed to Rufaro’s academic and professional journey.
Q1: Please introduce yourself

I am Rufaro Mugabe from Zimbabwe, currently pursuing a Bachelor of Technology in Software Engineering at Harare Institute of Technology (HIT). I also serve as the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Afrainity Technologies, where I lead the development of AI-powered solutions for education, healthcare, and customer engagement. I am passionate about using artificial intelligence to solve real-world challenges across Africa.

Q2: What motivated you to join GCI?

I joined GCI because I wanted to deepen my understanding of artificial intelligence and learn from leading researchers and talented students from around the world. The opportunity to collaborate internationally while working on practical AI projects made GCI an experience I couldn't miss.

Q3: What skills, knowledge, or experiences did you gain through GCI?

GCI strengthened my technical knowledge in AI while also improving my research, teamwork, and communication skills. I learned how to approach complex problems collaboratively, present technical ideas to different audiences, and build meaningful connections with students and researchers from diverse backgrounds.

Q4: How has GCI helped you in your academic or professional journey?

GCI gave me greater confidence to pursue ambitious AI projects and strengthened my interest in AI research and innovation. The knowledge and global network I gained have helped me grow as both a student and a technology leader, inspiring me to build solutions that create real impact in my community.

Q5: What was the most memorable part of your GCI experience?

The most memorable part was collaborating with talented people from different countries who shared the same passion for AI. Visiting Japan, learning directly from experts, and presenting our ideas in an international environment were experiences that broadened my perspective and will stay with me throughout my career.

The experience can truly change the way you think about technology and your future.
