Interview with GCI Alumni: Min from Vietnam
In this GCI Alumni Interview Series, we feature past participants of the Global Consumer Intelligence (GCI) program and share their experiences, learning journeys, and career growth after joining GCI.
This article features Do Minh Ngoc, a Graduate student at Nanjing University from Vietnam. Through this interview, Min shares what motivated her to join GCI, the skills and knowledge gained through the program, and how the experience has contributed to Min’s academic and professional journey.
Q1: Please introduce yourself

Hi everyone, my English name is Min (Vietnamese name is Minh Ngoc). I am from Vietnam and a master’s student at Nanjing University, majoring in Information Management and Data Analytics

Xin chào mọi người, mình là Minh Ngọc. Mình đến từ Việt Nam và là thạc sĩ tại Đại học Nam Kinh, chuyên ngành Information Management and Data Analytics.
Q2: What motivated you to join GCI?
(In English)
I joined GCI because I wanted to strengthen the knowledge and skills that are closely connected to my major, especially Python, machine learning, and practical data analysis. I also saw GCI as a valuable opportunity to challenge myself through a reputable and well-structured program from Matsuo-Iwasawa Lab at the University of Tokyo. Beyond that, I was motivated by the chance to learn alongside talented students from different countries and backgrounds. I believed that GCI would not only help me improve technically, but also broaden the way I think about data, business, and problem-solving.

Mình tham gia GCI vì muốn củng cố những kiến thức và kỹ năng liên quan trực tiếp đến chuyên ngành của mình, đặc biệt là Python, machine learning và phân tích dữ liệu thực tế. Mình cũng xem GCI là một cơ hội rất tốt để làm mạnh hơn hồ sơ học thuật và định hướng nghề nghiệp thông qua một chương trình uy tín từ Matsuo Lab Đại học Tokyo. Ngoài ra, mình cũng rất mong muốn được học cùng các bạn sinh viên tài năng đến từ nhiều quốc gia và nền tảng khác nhau. Với mình, GCI không chỉ là một khóa học giúp cải thiện kỹ năng kỹ thuật, mà còn là cơ hội để mở rộng tư duy về dữ liệu, kinh doanh và cách giải quyết vấn đề.
Q3: What skills, knowledge, or experiences did you gain through GCI?

Through GCI, I gained a more well-rounded understanding of data science, including Python, SQL, data visualization, machine learning, model evaluation, feature engineering, and business applications of data. The curriculum was very structured, so I could gradually connect basic concepts with more practical and advanced topics. What I appreciated most was that GCI was not only about learning theories. The competition gave me a Kaggle-style hackathon experience, where I had to test ideas, improve models, and think carefully about performance. The final assignment felt like solving a real business problem with data. Through these experiences, I improved not only my technical skills, but also my logical thinking, problem-solving ability, and confidence in working with data.

Thông qua GCI, mình có được nền tảng toàn diện hơn về data science, bao gồm Python, SQL, data visualization, machine learning, model evaluation, feature engineering và ứng dụng dữ liệu trong kinh doanh. Chương trình học được thiết kế rất hệ thống, giúp mình từng bước kết nối các kiến thức cơ bản với những nội dung thực tế và nâng cao hơn. Điều mình thích nhất là GCI không chỉ dừng lại ở lý thuyết. Phần competition mang lại cho mình trải nghiệm giống một Kaggle-style hackathon, nơi mình phải thử nghiệm ý tưởng, cải thiện mô hình và suy nghĩ kỹ về hiệu quả dự đoán. Bài cuối kỳ cũng giống như việc giải quyết một bài toán kinh doanh thực tế bằng dữ liệu. Qua những trải nghiệm đó, mình không chỉ cải thiện kỹ năng kỹ thuật, mà còn phát triển tư duy logic, khả năng giải quyết vấn đề và sự tự tin khi làm việc với dữ liệu.
Q4: How has GCI helped you in your academic or professional journey?

GCI helped me build a more systematic and logical way of approaching data. Before taking the course, I was familiar with some tools and concepts, but GCI helped me understand the full data workflow more clearly — from data cleaning, exploratory analysis, feature engineering, and model building to evaluation, interpretation, and practical application. This mindset has been very useful in my academic journey. I applied what I learned from GCI to my academic research at university and my master’s thesis, especially when working with data, structuring my analysis, and explaining results more clearly. It helped me become more confident, organized, and analytical throughout my research process.In that sense, GCI did not only teach me technical knowledge. It changed the way I think and work with data. It helped me see data not just as numbers or code, but as a way to understand problems more deeply and make better decisions based on evidence.

GCI giúp mình hình thành cách tiếp cận dữ liệu một cách logic và có hệ thống hơn. Trước khi tham gia khóa học, mình đã biết một số công cụ và khái niệm, nhưng GCI giúp mình hiểu rõ hơn toàn bộ quy trình làm việc với dữ liệu — từ xử lý dữ liệu, phân tích khám phá, feature engineering, xây dựng mô hình, đến đánh giá, diễn giải kết quả và ứng dụng thực tế. Tư duy này hỗ trợ mình rất nhiều trong quá trình học tập. Mình đã áp dụng những kiến thức học được từ GCI vào research ở trường và khóa luận tốt nghiệp thạc sĩ, đặc biệt là khi làm việc với dữ liệu, xây dựng cấu trúc phân tích và trình bày kết quả một cách rõ ràng hơn. Khóa học giúp mình tự tin hơn, làm việc có tổ chức hơn và có tư duy phân tích tốt hơn trong quá trình nghiên cứu. Với mình, GCI không chỉ dạy kiến thức kỹ thuật. Khóa học còn thay đổi cách mình tư duy và làm việc với dữ liệu. GCI giúp mình nhìn dữ liệu không chỉ là những con số hay dòng code, mà là một cách để hiểu vấn đề sâu hơn và đưa ra quyết định tốt hơn dựa trên bằng chứng
Q5: What was the most memorable part of your GCI experience?

The most memorable moment for me was when I found out that I had been selected as an Outstanding Student. It was not only a recognition of my effort, but also a reminder that consistent learning, curiosity, and persistence can truly lead to meaningful growth. However, what stayed with me even more than the result was how much my mindset changed throughout the course. Through the lectures, assignments, competition, and final project, I gradually learned to approach problems in a more logical, structured, and data-driven way. GCI helped me realize that data science is not only about using tools or building models, but also about asking the right questions, understanding the problem deeply, and turning data into practical insights. GCI also changed the way I think about AI. Before the course, I sometimes wondered whether AI could replace data-related work. But through learning and practicing, I came to understand more clearly what AI can and cannot do. I realized that AI is a powerful tool, but its real value depends on how people use it – with critical thinking, domain understanding, and responsibility.

Khoảnh khắc đáng nhớ nhất với mình là khi biết mình được chọn là Outstanding Student. Với mình, đó không chỉ là sự ghi nhận cho những nỗ lực trong suốt khóa học, mà còn là một lời nhắc rằng việc học tập bền bỉ, sự tò mò và tinh thần không bỏ cuộc thật sự có thể tạo ra kết quả xứng đáng. Tuy nhiên, điều đọng lại với mình nhiều hơn cả kết quả đó là tư duy của mình đã thay đổi rất nhiều trong quá trình học. Thông qua các bài giảng, bài tập, competition và final project, mình dần học được cách tiếp cận vấn đề một cách logic, có cấu trúc và dựa trên dữ liệu hơn. GCI giúp mình nhận ra rằng data science không chỉ là việc sử dụng công cụ hay xây dựng mô hình, mà còn là khả năng đặt câu hỏi đúng, hiểu sâu vấn đề và biến dữ liệu thành những insight có giá trị thực tiễn. GCI cũng thay đổi cách mình suy nghĩ về AI. Trước khóa học, đôi khi mình tự hỏi liệu AI có thể thay thế các công việc liên quan đến dữ liệu hay không. Nhưng sau quá trình học và thực hành, mình hiểu rõ hơn AI có thể và không thể làm gì. Mình nhận ra rằng AI là một công cụ rất mạnh, nhưng giá trị thật sự của nó phụ thuộc vào cách con người sử dụng – với tư duy phản biện, sự hiểu biết về bối cảnh và tinh thần trách nhiệm.
Q6: What would you say to someone considering applying to GCI?

I would say: go for it with curiosity and persistence. You do not need to be perfect when you start GCI; what matters is being willing to learn, practice, and grow step by step.

Mình muốn nói rằng: hãy thử với sự tò mò và tinh thần kiên trì. Bạn không cần phải biết mọi thứ trước khi tham gia, nhưng cần sẵn sàng học đều đặn, thực hành chủ động và thử thách bản thân.
