Prof. Juan Velasquez, who is active in the field of medical engineering, visited Matsuo Lab on Friday, December 6.

Prof. Velasquez and Matsuo have a long-standing relationship in terms of sending and receiving students, and through this relationship, Prof. Velasquez has given several lectures at the Matsuo Institute.

The lecture was given on the theme of “Application of Artificial Intelligence for the Future of Healthcare” to an audience of nearly 80 people, including not only researchers and students assigned to the Matsuo Lab but also online participants such as students attending lectures.

Bio:* Dr. Juan D. Velazquez, Professor, Department of Industrial Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Chile.
In his academic activities, he has supervised more than 140 master’s and doctoral theses and research reports and authored more than 140 scientific papers and book chapters.
He is the author of the book “Adaptive Web Site: A Knowledge Extraction from Web Data Approach” published by IOS Press in 2008. In addition, he was editor-in-chief of the book series “Advanced Techniques in Web Intelligence,” parts 1 and 2, published by Springer-Verlag in 2010 and 2012.

Title: Using Artificial Intelligence for the Future of Healthcare

Abstract:* Healthcare has tended to focus more on treating disease and less on prevention.
This paradigm has been shaped by factors such as the education of medical professionals, a historical lack of quality data, limited processing power, and a lack of interdisciplinary collaboration. Today, however, this paradigm is shifting toward a more proactive approach aimed at maintaining health and preventing disease. This innovative vision is embodied in the concept of “4P medicine.
This innovative vision is embodied in the concept of “4P Medicine”: Preventive, Participatory, Predictive, and Personalized medicine.
This presentation will explore how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the medical field and making 4P medicine a reality.
Specifically, the presentation will focus on how to integrate and analyze diverse and complex data sources such as DNA sequencing, electronic medical records, CT images, EEG records, pharmacological databases, and environmental variables. These data sets are growing exponentially in size and complexity, making AI indispensable in extracting meaningful insights and improving healthcare outcomes.
Additionally, we will discuss real-world applications where AI can process vast and diverse data sets, improve diagnostic accuracy, and enable early detection and prevention of disease. In particular, specific examples of AI-driven decision support systems and predictive models to assist healthcare professionals will be presented to show how these technologies not only improve the efficiency of healthcare, but also empower interdisciplinary teams to tackle longstanding challenges with innovative solutions.
By leveraging advances in AI, machine learning, and computational resources, we stand at a tipping point where we can address current and future challenges to global health. This talk will highlight the critical role AI will play in transforming healthcare into a data-driven, collaborative, and forward-looking field that saves lives and improves quality of life worldwide.

Mr. Juan Velasquez, thank you very much for coming to Matsuo Institute.
