    There are several ways to enroll in Matsuo Lab.
    (We do not accept any special non-degree students except MEXT Scholarship students and interns.)

    Program for Social Innovation – PSI(Undergrad)


    Freshmen and sophomores of UTokyo (or transfer students from other universities to Bachelor course of UT) firstly proceed to PSI (Program for Social Innovation, Faculty of Engineering), then can be assigned to Matsuo Lab if you pass the laboratory assignment interview.

    Technology Management for Innovation – TMI (Master course)


    There are three ways to apply for the Master’s course.
    Entrance examination information is subject to change, so applicants should check the application guidelines before applying.

    1)Take an entrance examination for TMI
    Applicants must apply around June of each year, and take an exam around end August. You can be assigned to Matsuo Lab if you pass the laboratory assignment interview held after the entrance.

    2)Take the G30-TMI Entrance Examination
    Applicants for this program must be non-Japanese citizens and non-residents of Japan.

    3) Take the Entrance Examination as a Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Student

    We can accept Japanese government (MEXT) scholars recommended by Japanese embassies as research students.
    If you are interested in this option, please contact the Japanese embassy in your home country.
    Applicants will take the preliminary selection in the Japanese Embassy in their own home countries.
    After passing the preliminary selection by the embassy, the applicants will be further evaluated by School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo for acceptance.

    Technology Management for Innovation – TMI (Ph.D. course)


    Applicants to the Ph.D. program are also required to take the TMI entrance examination.
    In addition, prior interview and approval from Professor Matsuo are mandatory before submitting a formal application. Please make sure to follow the prescribed process.
    The application process for the Ph.D. program at Matsuo–Iwasawa Lab for enrollment in October 2026 and April 2027 is as follows:

    Selection Period:

    • 1st Round: Mid-November 2025 – Late January 2026
    • 2nd Round: Late March 2026 – Late May 2026
       *The second round is currently open. Applicants who applied in the first round are also welcome to reapply.

    Application Submission:

    1. Applicants are requested to send the following documents by email:
      • Email subject: PhD Application_your name (e.g., PhD Application_Taro Yamada)
      • Recipients:sec@weblab.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp, research-application@weblab.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp (Please send to both addresses)
      • Documents to submit: CV, Research Proposal (free format)
        • The research proposal should include the following two points:
          1. Your past achievements and research experience
          2. Your research plan for the three years of the PhD program and the preparations you have made so far
      • Deadline: April 15, 2026, 23:59 (JST)
    2. Online interview with the researchers: approx. 30 minutes (Late April 2026)
      • First 15 minutes: Presentation of your research proposal
      • Last 15 minutes: Q&A session
    3. Interview with Professor Matsuo (May 2026)
    4. Submit the application for TMI(Required)

    Matsuo-Iwasawa Laboratory Open Laboratory


    The Open Laboratory will take place as follows:
    During the event, faculty members and students will introduce the laboratory, give short talks about their research and student life, and offer a tour of the facilities.
    If you are interested in joining the laboratory or considering it as a minor, we warmly encourage you to attend.
