Advances in scientific data accumulation and data science methodologies have enabled the quantitative identification of patterns in scientific collaboration. The science of team science (SciTS), an emerging field within the science of science, seeks to understand how scientific teams organize, communicate, and conduct research. Following the PRISMA statement, this review analyzed 75 articles and six review articles from four perspectives of data sources, research methods, disciplinary characteristics, and research topics. We identified three major topics: team composition, team assembly, and scientific credit. Team composition includes six aspects: national, ethnic, institutional, gender, disciplinary, and seniority diversity. Team assembly includes team formation, size, and freshness. Scientific credit includes academic rank and professional role, contributorship and the division of labor, and impacts of retractions on team members. We suggest that future research should apply large language models and causal inference methods, develop a more multidimensional assessment framework for team performance, and pay attention to team dynamics and ethics.
